Cologne, once referred to as "Beer-vana" by celebrated beer authority Michael Jackson, is a bit of a paradox: though host to roughly 28 breweries, nearly all produce just one beer—the appellation controlee Kolsch. Luckily, those interested in a more varied drinking experience have Weissbrau, a brewpub halfway between Cologne and Munich. Opened in 1991 by a Bavarian transplant, Weissbrau is one of a handful of breweries in the city that makes a Weizen, or wheat beer. A Kolsch and Czech-styled Schwarzbier (black beer) round out the tap selection, and an impressive Bavarian menu spoils guests for gastronomic choice. The clientele ranges from students and young professionals during the week to a veritable cross-section of Cologne on Sundays. The spacious brewpub has seating on two floors with an upstairs balcony available in warmer months. Weissbrau also caters and rents out function rooms for private parties. –Brent KatteNYC Best Hotel Deals: 50% Savings In New York!
