For an interpretive history of Antigua and Barbuda's past, visit this non-profit museum set in the stately former courthouse of St John's. Numerous artifacts collected largely through field excavations populate the exhibits. These include hunting and fighting tools of the Amerindians (many several thousand years old) and tools used during the heyday of sugar plantations. An overview of Amerindian life, as well as that of early colonization, sugar production and slavery, complete the experience. Don't miss the impressive life-size replica of an Amerindian hut and Sir Viv Richard's cricket bat hanging on the wall. For study or research, take advantage of the reference library with computer data that totals more than 25,000 records. Special events are regularly planned and a guided tour can also be requested in advance. The museum relies on support from the public. Please make a small donation if you can, or purchase something from the gift shop.
