The City of Kansas City Should Sue!
I can't think of a single positive thing to say about this restaurant. The kids were getting hungry from all the exploring we were doing, so we figured we'd stop and the next restaurant we happened across. BIG MISTAKE. Upon entering, not a single server/hostess was there to greet us, so we took it upon ourselves to seat ourselves at an outside table. Maybe 10 minutes go by before we're acknowledged with menus and waters. Now, being in San Diego, I wasn't expecting great BBQ, but at least passable. I've never tasted meat more dry and bland as what they put in front of us. The brisket and chicken were awful and the 2 sauces provided no help. Mercifully, we were out of there in under an hour and washed the taste out of our mouths with some Ben & Jerry's!! Please, whatever you do, avoid this tourist trap at all costs.

Good Times
The whole attitude of the place is great! Come in with a sense of humor. The patches on the wall are great. I brought one from Wisconsin and it's proudly hanging on the wall. Sit back, have a few beers and B.S. with the bartender. The Top Gun stuff is cool to see as well.

Don't go for the food.
A second location with the same menu had to make it on just the food and failed. Go for Top Gun, don't expect much from the menu, and you won't be disappointed.

Friendliest Place In Southern Cal
I have visited the KC BBQ MANY times from Wisconsin. The staff, especially, JERRY, have come to be like family. We met by chance on a trip about 15 years ago, and this is our first stop when we arrive in San Diego. Our license plate hangs proudly near the bar, and we are treated like royalty with each visit. We recommend this place to all we know traveling or stationed in the area. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, KCBBQ. You rule!!!

depends on what you expect
We live practically next door and finally decided to try this place. If you're expecting anything fancy, keep looking. They have plastic silverware. As far as BBQ goes, we know good barbecue and I have to say this place is just a little better than so-so. They do not have a full bar, but it looks like they do when you walk in. It was a surprise they only had wine and beer. The service was very friendly and non-pretentious in our experience, but they weren't very busy. I can imagine that when this place is busy, you'll have to be very patient with the girls who wait tables. The side dishes were fairly good. The "Top Gun" memorobilia had no impact on our experience although we had a few laughs at their expense with the waitress, who was lovely. Out of 5 stars, I think a 3 is appropriate. My pork ribs were a bit on the greasy side and not as good as my own, but their bbq sauce is pretty good. To be fair, we've only had the pork bbq ribs, nothing else.

Best Barbecue in So-Cal!
If you want to try the best barbecue in So-Cal, this is it! Not only is the food incredible, but the atmosphere is just what's needed to relax in. I recommend the tri-tip sandwich. Lots of memoriabelia from not only Kansas, Kansas City decorate the venue, but also there's the Top Gun Room! Remember to bring quarters for the parking meters.
