While the East Village has long been a hip neighborhood, it first was an ethnic community. This Ukranian restaurant is a remnant of that history, although it is extremely modern and bright looking. Veselka is a combination luncheonette and sidewalk café with an Eastern European air. Breakfast muffins, bagels, potato pancakes and cheese blintzes are among the selections. Lunch can be a hearty borscht and pierogies. For dinner, try the kielbasa or veal goulash. And anytime, stop in for an egg cream or dessert.
