Overview
San Miniato is one of the most striking examples of Florentine Romanesque architecture, characterized by its bicoloured white and green marble façade. The altar, pulpit and transept recess feature fine marble décor, while the floor, in keeping with the Romanesque style, is decorated with symbolic ornamental motifs. Halfway along the nave on the left is another chapel; the Cappella del Cardinale Portogallo, which was designed by one of Brunelleschi's pupils. The architectural and decorative style resembles one of Brunelleschi's first creations; the Sagrestia Vecchia (Old Sacristy), which can be seen in San Lorenzo church.Walking up to San Miniato is an experience in and of itself, but once you get there, it is absolutely breathtaking. Standing right outside of the church is the best view of Florence you'll get. Not only is the view amazing, but you have to go into the church as well. It is the most unique and beautiful layout, and very peaceful. It is definitely a must see in Florence.
Its was very much an inspirational Place,On the highest peak of Florence , which had 360 view of the whole town. And the fact that it was an Armenian Prince that traveled there , before even Armenia was Converted to Christianity in 301 AD as the first Christian Country.
This has to be the epitome of grace and harmony, and the soul of Florence if not Italy. Its beauty is an inspiration, its artistic merits encapsulate what Italian culture means, its history reflects the diversity of Florence, and its spirituality promotes what is best about the Catholic tradition and the Italian approach to religion. The church is a sanctuary of peace and the solitude, after the busyness of the streets or Florence and the tourists in Piazza Michelangelo, is a haven of tranquillity. I would recommend this place be included on any itinerary for Florence and it is worth every step of the climb up the hill of steps - or there is a bus from the centre of town. Imagine walking from the hot sun into the cool and beautiful interior with carved marble floor, gorgeous mosaics, pale and interesting fresco paintings, and lovely patterned and carved marble pillars, altar, supports and steps, a fabulous altar with wonderful gilded Madonna altarpiece. Then you hear the chant of the monks from the crypt and a wave of peace and calm sweeps over you. This is San Miniato - a very special and very spiritual place.
Church is beautiful, very balanced, not oversized. The panoramic view of Florence from the terrace in front of church is also worth of excursion. There is a cementary surrounding a church.
The church was started nearly one thousand years ago and is amazing. The evening office of vespers and the mass that follows are sung in Latin. Too wonderful for words.
The site was breathtaking. I would recommend visiting to anyonw who gets a chance.
