Overview
Frankfurt's main train station was opened in 1888 after five hard years of construction work. It is still one of the largest train stations in Europe with 25 platforms and over 1,500 trains departing every day. The monumental natural stone facade features an ornamental clock and is crowned by a sculpture of Atlas bearing the earth on his shoulders. The building is split up into three halls, all of which have been recently renovated. The station now boasts dozens of shops, food outlets and a stylish waiting room.
I was on my way to Munich for Oktoberfest several years back but my purse was snatched on the train platform. I filed a German police report. A package arrived after I got home to the US with my handbag with everything in it! Hang on to your stuff!
This is a classic world class train station that can get you just about anywhere you would like to go in Europe. The grocery store and some food is open on Sunday, so it is helpful when everything else is closed. The atmosphere is interesting and there is even a Starbucks!
I went here by train from darmstadt (a city about 20-30 minutes away) it iwas so cool, just absolutely awesome. The outside was very beautiful.
I probably would have starved to death if it weren't for the Hauptbahnhof in Frankfurt. When I went to live in Frankfurt to attend school, I had no idea that everything (and I do mean everything) is closed on Sunday in Germany. Only the grocery store and pharmacy at the train station are open on Sunday. I'm told they can make you show a train ticket to be able to shop there during the off hours but no one ever asked me for one.
the hauptbahnhof is one of the most cooles rialstation that i visit in my life and i recomend that any one visit germany to visit the frankfurt am main hauptbahnhof
Just the sheer magnitude of the place is awesome- it's HUGE!!!!! Lots of trains coming and going, which is good. You can catch a train to just about anywhere in Germany and beyond. Lots of stores and booths to catch a bite to eat or buy a book or newspaper.There's alot of restaurants real close by if you want something a little more substantial. Really a great experience if you travel by train!!!
