Overview

This church, built for the United Presbyterians in the late 1850s, is regarded as Alexander "Greek" Thomson's masterpiece. Thomson's style was influenced by Assyrian, Egyptian and Indian architecture, as can clearly be seen here. It takes the form of a temple-like edifice and an unconnected tower, the effect of which has been sadly diminished by neighboring office blocks. The interior is as impressive as ever, though strikingly high and light. The church is now owned by Glasgow City Council and Free Church of Scotland services are held here. It is open to the public by appointment.

Shame On You, Glasgow!by Yahoo | 2004-11-27 09:00:05 |

A heart-stopping elegant Greek building, set off by its adjacent tower which is pleasingly (not jarringly) in an entirely different style. It's best seen from the south in St Vincent Street itself. Set on a podium buried into a steep hillside, in full frontal it's so dominatingly as to be almost overwhelming; it's best viewed in three-quarter view, when its proportions are seen to better advantage. Inside, it is light and airy, with surprisingly ornate decoration - perhaps an expression of the huge self-confidence of mid-Victorian Glasgow. The exterior, however, is in an appalling state of disrepair. I believe the building is owned by Glasgow Council, who should be thoroughly ashamed of their neglect. I appreciate they have other calls on their budget, but if unable to take good care of this classic, they should perhaps consider handing it over to some other body who can lavish some serious restorative effort upon this acknowledged classic.
