Overview

Antigua is among the oldest and most beautiful towns in Guatemala, even the Americas. Its clean air, peaceful atmosphere, pleasant accommodation, lively bar scene and great choice of restaurants make it a favorite place to visit. Although nowadays a bit removed from traditional Guatemalan culture due to its popularity with tourists, Antigua still retains its old charm, with cobbled streets, colonial houses and beautiful surroundings. Set in a valley close to Agua, Fuego and Acatenango volcanoes, the town provides stunning views. Most of Antigua's buildings date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many ruins are well-preserved and open for public viewing. In addition, there are more than 40 language schools with very competitive prices, making it the main destination in Central America for travelers wishing to learn Spanish. The best Easter festivities in the country also take place here.

Nice day tripby Yahoo | 2008-06-03 22:39:40 |

My husband and I stayed at the Westin Hotel in Guatemala City and we hired a private driver and tour guide to take us to La Antigua. We did a walking tour. Our guide was fantastic and we learned a lot of history about the city! The people are so friendly, it is a clean place to visit and the food is wonderful. Now, my husband and I both got parasites from the food, but it was still amazing food. The markets are a fun place to visit and bargain shop. I wish I would have bought twice as much as I did. The drive to and from Guatemala City is very nice...twisting roads through the mountains and lots to look at. A must-see and must-do for adoptive parents or anyone who comes to Guatemala city. It's only a 45 minute drive to La Antigua. The experience is something you will carry with you forever!

I walked with one of my students the city, got lost few times and thanks to the people we got back to our original itinerary. many tourists we saw there and not owrried about safety. We enede up in a restaurant in which the foodwas excellent and the service outstanding. I am planning in going back.

It is a haven. I lived here for about a year and did some volunteer work, and fell in love with the people and culture, but most of all Antigua. Its gorgeous from the architecture to mayan people. The Coffee shops and bars are full of tourist year round. I highly encourage everyone to stop by.

Antigua is great for it's arcitechture, churches, and museums. Walking on cobblestone all day may tire the feet but it is a great place if you enjoy walking and looking. You will see a bit of everything in Antigua and you can find people from all over. Great place to go to study Spanish as there are fabulous language schools. Be sure to stop by the artisans market for some shopping!

Antigua will become a second homeby Yahoo | 2006-06-18 19:10:15 |

Antigua is an incredibly historic city, previously being the capital of Guatemala. The cobble streets, colonial style buildings, good food, internet cafes and very friendly people. It calls you to return. Its close access to the airport and capital city make it ideal to visit. It is also an ideal location to learn spanish as Antigua florishes with learning centers. It is also ideally located for the purpose of reaching out and serving individuals with economical challenges. Enjoy!
