Built near the Hamburg port and established in the 1980s, Gruner & Jahr is yet another representative of Hamburg's spectacular contemporary architecture. Architects Steidle and Kiessler utilized tons of glass and zinc for the facade, as well as decorative elements which conjure up an association with the city's maritime history. The part of the building facing the waterways, though having a futuristic design, actually reminds one of a ship's pontoon bridge- especially due to the railing and window decor. Gruner & Jahr also rents out its space for trade fairs and other business events during the course of the year.
