Overview

A fine example of 18th-century ecclesiastic architecture, the façade is full of columns, niches and other baroque embellishments, in contrast to the asymmetry of the spires. Close to the sea and dominating one of the main squares within the old city walls, it was once inhabited by Jesuit priests until they were evicted, the building was then consecrated as Havana Cathedral in 1789. On the inside there are copies of paintings by Rubens and Murillo on the alters, and at the top end of the choir section one can see part of frescoes by Italian artist Giuseppe Perovanni. Some of Columbus' remains were kept here between 1796 and 1898, and there is a finely crafted sculpture of Saint Christopher, Patron Saint of Havana, which dates from 1632 and was made by Martín Andújar in Seville, Spain. Admission is free. Open: Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday from 8 a.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m.

Loved every moment of my trip and the Cathedral is just the most beautiful place I have ever seen. I also went to " Capitolio " in the center of Havana and it was also beautiful and in-expenssive to enter.

Beautiful to walk inside, Went through with my best friend, Whose comment was - "If you have nothing, and you come and see this, and you've not yet met science, you would be forgiven for thinking and eventually believing that this was greated by men to worship a great God" Walked past with my new girlfriend a few days later. Spectacular at night.

There is nothing to fear, the country is Wonderful. Full of culture, polite, friendly diginfied and educated people. The country is clean and has many lessons to be learned regarding the importance of family, education, sacrfice, ecology,and true patriotism. Music and smiles fill the streets along with "Havana Dogs". Please take treats. This country is in need of many daily needs, please take toiletries to hand out. Enjoy and show this country and the people there love and respect from their neighbors. A expierence that is worth the money and time. Mambo !!!

this place is something that brins a warm feeling with it .. maybe because it's so big and on a right spot.. when I stood in front of the cathedral it acured to me for the first time how beautiful old building actually can be. i would really recommand you who will go to cuba to take a look there . ofcourse when your with a tour you'll pass there .and then you'll see what I meen

It's wonderful just to walk thru and admire the workmanship, But to fully see and appriciate it take a tour thru it .. I'v been to it four times and find something new to look at each time ..
