Overview

Havana's statue of Christ blesses the city from the other side of the bay, much like another well-known effigy of Jesus that gazes down on Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. This particular marble sculpture is the work of Jilma Madera, and was erected in 1958 on a rise in the land that offers the perfect place to watch the sunset. Access is either by road, or across the bay in a boat.

The statue of Christ is located near the bay's entrance in Havana. Few foreign visitors will notice its presence and only private guides may point this statue to you. Christ stands blessing the city and the incoming ships into the harbor on top of the same hills that the British use to conquer the city. Made out of white marble, the statue was erected in the late 50's before Castro took power. The spot where it stands will offer the best view of the city and one if the best photo ops you can get, please be mindful of locals that seek personal space for their thoughts and meditations at that spot. Access to the top of this hill is not clearly marked and may be a bit confusing. Don't worry the neighborhood is not bad, just extremely poor. A 24-hour snack bar operates close to the statue's base, however you will be best serve if you hold your apetite and your wallet until you reach the other side of the bay. The access boats that cross the bay are scary, however reliable.
