Overview
Mount Field National Park is one of Tasmania's oldest and most popular parks with beautiful bushland walks, tiny lakes carved by ancient glaciers, cascading waterfalls and a highland plateau dotted with windswept snow gums and stunted pines. The park has easy access with many good bush walks, including Russell Falls, which takes about 10 minutes. The path passes through a temperate rain forest to a magnificent waterfall dropping 50 meters into a shaded fern-filled gorge. There are many lovely picnic spots and barbecue facilities are provided. In winter, the park is a popular skiing destination.it is so nice and cool in summer. you can feel the earths natural airconditioning. but in winteer the snow is also an attraction. i have an all year pass, and it is value for money.
Unfortunately we had no other time to visit Russell Falls and so we went in the rain. It was very wet and very cold. But it was an experience anyway. The falls were magnificent. There is a range of walks from simply going to the bottom of the falls, to climbing to the top of the falls. Plastic raincoats could be bought at the shop and we all managed to keep relatively dry with them. I recommend visiting on a fine day.
The short walk from the Visitor Centre to the Falls is a must. We saw wallabies with baby Joeys in their pouches as it was just after the mating season. The falls are spectacular. Don't miss out on the walk to the top of the falls. the view of the falls from the top across the valley is worth the uphill hike. Also take the time to visit the Tall Trees area which is about a 10 min drive from the visitors centre. It is a short circular trail which meanders past some pretty tall trees and fern gullys.
