Overview

Established in 1818 and set on a gentle slope with wonderful vistas of the Derwent River, are 13.5 hectares of peace and solitude. The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens contain over 6500 species, including more than 400 Tasmanian plants. An interesting curiosity is the Arthur Wall near the main gate which was once heated by fires to keep the frost from exotic species. The gardens are home to a succulent fuchsia house, herb garden, extensive conifer collection and Chinese and Japanese gardens, as well as a stunning conservatory and spectacular annual bed displays.

Open Hours

Mo to Su from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM

I could see the gardens again and againby Yahoo | 2008-08-13 02:15:36 |

The gardens are just magnificent. Many facets that would interest people of all ages. Japanese gardens were great as was the Sub Antartic Polar House. The sun was shining and it was just a magical afternoon.

Hobart Highlightby Yahoo | 2007-10-13 09:41:34 |

Visiting the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens was one of the highlights of our Tas trip. The weather was beautiful and the tulips were in full bloom. And it is FREE. Was hoping for the 'interactive' bit but apparently it is not there any more. But it was lovely all the same. I actually went twice and would happily go again. It was fun to look at Peter Cundall's garden too.

I really enjoyed going here for the Tulip Festival, the Japenese garden is VERY cool, as was pretty much everything, but it rains too often :)

So quiet, calm and brilliant. I frequently go there to wind down a bit after a busy day. Always a good place to take a book and read under a tree, or take the kids on a hot day and let them run wild.
