Overview

Opened in 1978, this is Hong Kong's second racetrack, the main one being the Happy Valley Racecourse. Races at Shatin are usually held on Saturday afternoons but there always extra races on Sundays and public holidays. Penfold Park, which occupies the center of the racetrack, is a popular place for parents to bring their children for outings. On Mondays, days following public holidays, and race days, the park is closed to the public, but if you call the park any other time, you can schedule a tour of the facilities. Racing in Hong Kong is very popular with attendance averaging upwards of 46,000 people per racecard, so make sure you get there early! Admission is 10HKD.

As with all things Hong Kong Shatin is tidy well presented and perfectly maintained, but the thing that hits you most is the scale.Shatin is huge, probably three times the size of Happy Valley, the day I went was a rainy Sunday aftermoon and the smallish crowd just dissappeared into the massive stands,I'd love to see it full it must be anmazing.I go racing regularly in the uk and there's just nothing you can compare Shatin to,it dwarfs Ascot,Newmarket and York, the parade ring has a retractable roof,it also boast's the biggest video screen in the world in the centre of the course,it also has turf and all weather tracks.I went as a guest of an annual member who I met at Happy Valley but if you take your passport you can get a tourist's day members badge for $100 about £6.50 which is great value, especially considering the average equivalent in the UK would be £20.
