Schloß Ambras Castles, Palaces & Historic Buildings
Europe's Oldest MuseumOverview
This palace was turned into a museum by Archduke Ferdinand II. The Wunderkammer (Gallery of Wonders) contains a display of exotic objects like coral, ivory, a rhinoceros' horn and other artifacts brought back to Europe by the explorers. The upper part of the palace houses the Habsburg's portrait gallery: an awe-inspiring collection of works by Cranach, Mor, Titian, Van Dyck and Velásquez.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 10:00 AM to 05:00 PMThe Schloss Ambras castle is surely a work of art from the 16th and 17th century paintings to the beautiful gardens and landscaping surrounding the castle. The gardens would make a highly suitable setting for taking wedding pictures, as I had seen taking place during my visit to Schloss Ambras. The collection of knight armour and weapons is a must see as well as Archduke Ferdinand II's museum and personal collection of artifacts and artworks. Though it is not your typical idea of what a "castle" should look like it is still very much impressive. There is something there for everyone. I would advise you to take the shuttle bus that goes every hour to the castle. The bus stop can be located along Maria-Theresian Strass. During your ride on the shuttle bus you will also be given a brief tour of the locations that shuttle bus will cover on it's way to the castle. The tour is given in several different languages through the use of a headset.
