Overview
Twenty galleries filled with artifacts gathered from all over Turkey and the Near East celebrate 5,000 years of history with exhibits from Byzantium, the Ottoman Empire and the many civilizations of Anatolia and ancient Egypt. The main building houses the finds of nineteenth-century archaeologist Osman Hamdi Bey, in particular the famous fourth-century Alexander sarcophagus discovered at the royal necropolis of Sidon in Lebanon. The Museum of the Ancient Orient contains artifacts from Egypt and Mesopotamia, including a magnificent frieze of a bull from the Ishtar gate in Babylon.Open Hours

The place is huge and there are several buildings to look at. I thought the best part of the whole place was Alexander the Great's tomb. Don't miss it. It's worth the admission alone.
The atmosphere from the first moment is breath taking. Beautiful old buildings, set in a big park of cpyresses take one back in time to quiet, slow eras. The new tile museum, or the kiosk is simply out of this world. The main building presentation is not the best, but the artifacts in display are incredible. So many cultures and civilizations are crammed into vast halls. A third small building houses Hamurrabis tablets and Qadesh Treaty, one of the first written record of international agreement. What an experience!
That is in the sarcophagi section ; along with other sarcophagi found by the Ottomans, excavations led by the founder of thisd museum: Osman Hamdi Bey. It is good to know that the roof decorations of this museum building comes from the lead ( roof ) decorations of some of the sarcophagi you will be looking at. Osman HAmdi is also one of the greatest Turkish paintinter - an orientalist; his famous painting turtle trainer is at Pera Museum in Istanbul a short detour from the absolute fun street, Istiklal; Istanbul's version of Times Square, people and entertaintment-wise. the museum was a wonderful experience. I love architecture and enjoyed the museum. You should go in the summer when the architecture looks the greatest. I was amazed by it
This museum was fantastic. One of the best sites in Istanbul, it has a wonderful collection of Classical Greek and Hellenistic art. It also has an impressive collectino of Near Eastern art, and while the Egyptian art is nice, it is not as impressive as other areas in the Near East. Still, the museum is a must stop tour for anyone visiting Istanbul.
a fantastic world in a fantastic atmosphere, hundreds of years in a view!!! worth to see it.
