This extravagantly beautiful mosque sits on nine and a half hectares of land. Ironically, President Soekarnoto chose a Christian architect to design it. Construction lasted from 1961 to 1967, but its official opening did not occur until 1978. One of the largest mosques in Southeast Asia, Mesjid Istiqlal can accommodate more than 10,000 people and 800 vehicles. It comprises five levels, and its walls, walkways and floors are almost entirely covered with marble from Tulungagung, East Java. Dress modestly, and remove shoes before entering. Women must wear head scarves. It was built by President Soeharto, continuing plans from President Soekarno There has never and has not yet been a President Soekonoto. It woud be nice if you extended the same care and attention you pay to white names to ours.
The Mosq very nice also inside. nice design .so many quran and many people come and go for pray, also many people ( mostly womens) sell something there and rent coverheads / cowls Last time when i went there with my friend from Washington, the people around Istiqlal not allowed us to come inside because my friends not moeslim and western, so wheni tried to talk to one of them they ask money from my friend, then we give him money then they allowed us to go inside. some nice people there and i like the place but i dont like the people around there.
