Overview

Just a short walk from the convention center and numerous downtown hotels, The Phoenix is the place to go to experience the city's famous jazz scene. It hosts live bands seven-nights-a-week and charges no cover. The room is small and often crowded, but the close quarters add to the festive atmosphere. Local and regional bands share the stage with big-name talents, making this the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy a musical evening on the town. Apart from the entertaining music, a lot of delicious and healthy salads, appetizers and refreshing drinks are on the menu.

          Good atmosphere, slow serviceby Yahoo | 2005-11-29 06:47:14 |

The Phoenix sprang up like wildflowers when I did a search on piano bars in Kansas City. Accessibly located downtown, it's an average-sized bar with an impressive menu and a tiny stage which could barely fit the three-piece band, which wasn't even using the house's baby grand. At 8:00 on a Sat. night, the service was extremely slow, although the joint was barely half full. I don't know how much home-brand bourbon usually goes for, but $8/shot is a bit much. The band was good, but wasn't the caliber I expected from Kansas City. The atmosphere is what earns it my 3-star rating. Interesting wall postings, including pictures of famous musicians, combined with the small-club feel almost made us forget that it took over 15 minutes for the server to process our bill.

          Very Cool Barby Yahoo | 2004-09-23 21:01:59 |

Excellent live music, no cover charge, and the place was not overly crowded. The drinks were brought to us quickly and included plenty of liquor.
