Overview
Anyone who enjoys tales about pirates and buried treasure will appreciate this small museum. Named for a local salvager who found sunken treasure aboard a wrecked Spanish galleon, the museum currently houses a collection of these treasures, including doubloons, solid gold bars and four sunken ships from as far back as 1560. The museum also shows a film on Mr. Fisher that describes his 1985 discovery. Admission: Adult-$11.00 Student with ID-$9.50 Child-$6.50.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 09:30 AM to 05:00 PMI remember my dad giving my mother actual Atocha coin earrings (not the replicas) when i was in high school. shortly after giving birth to our 5th child, my husband won a cruise through work. a stop in key west led us to the museum where my husband presented me with pair of my own earrings! in just a few months, we are going back to key west with our children, and i can't wait to share this wonderful experience with my children!
When in Key West, make this a stop on the list. Mel Fisher was lucky treasure hunter. And what he found was the mother load. The bars of silver here are amazing! There is also gold and jems to be found. Artifacts from the ships and where there were found. So close to the island of Key West. There is a finger bar of gold here that you can pick up and feel how heavy gold is. They say, try with your fingers, since it is a finger bar, I had to use my hand. Can't watch people in the movies the same after that. This a very intirestig place to walk though and check out. When walking in, you can also get tickets to Hemingways place, cheaper. The a/c is great in the summer. Money well spent. Going back Feb 08.
Museum was really nice. Atmosphere kind of reflects the old Key West. Lots of relics and jewels from shipwrecks. Thought it would be smaller, but it is two stories. Well worth the money.
This is just one of those things you need to do. For $11 for can do and come ALL DAY. It is so close to many other things and Deval ST in the down town.
The museum has a nice layout and building. The displays are very good, not as much of the artifacts on display as I had hoped for. Unfortunately no tours of the actual conservation going on upstairs, I wish they would add it as a special tour, would bring the museum from a grade of C+ to A. One big kick that you can not miss while there is the gold bar display, you get to stick your hand in a glass box and hold a gold bar in your hand, was more fun than I thought that it would be.
is what I plan to do. I was entralled with the treasures displayed there. I bought a silver tie tack just to have something from the "find." I don't wear ties much either. The price was $50.00 and that's something for me to spend on such. I watched the movies of the quest for the treasures and wished that I was there when they found the "glorious" artifacts. Had to be heart stopping for Mel and Crew. Overall, it was worth the trip, for me.
You will get captured by the story of Mel Fisher and his treasure hunting. It is awesome to see all the gold and artifacts found from the sunken trips.
$11 to get in. You see more treasure in the stores. The video was a waste of time. Did not like at all. My mom was also very unhappy. The only plus is seeing one of the large gold chains. THe museum is more about some slave ship, not the treasure or atocha.
This Heritage Museum is very well designed. You can comfortably view large number of artifacts, treasure pieces and read articles describing the excitement of finding the treasure trove. Shopping for either the real treasure pieces or replicas for sale, adds to your experience. The Book "Search for the Atocha" tells the whole exciting story of the treasure hunt - I've read it twice! Ask to meet Mel Fisher - he's "part" of the treasure!
We loved it!! I saw families with kids of all ages and never heard "when are we leaving?" or "I'm bored". The exhibits are set up with a wonderful eye for tying the enthralling history of the ships, passengers and cargo to the search and discovery by this amazing man - Mel Fisher. There was a definite feeling of the comraderie and determination he inspired in all those involved with his quest. This museum is definitely worth visiting.
