Holy Trinity Cathedral Attractions & Landmark

A national landmark

1 Emerald Road
Kingston,
JM, Jamaica

Overview

This church is the only one in Jamaica with a copper roof. It was built in 1911, and the beautiful stained glass windows are of that vintage. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust declared this Catholic church a National Landmark recently, and the pipe organ is the oldest and largest in the English-speaking Caribbean. Most funeral services for the nation's dignitaries, such as those of late Prime Minister Michael Manley, are held here. Call ahead for service hours.

Restore the art work of Bro. Schroen, SJby Yahoo | 2007-10-25 10:19:32 |

The building is a magnificent structure. The disappointment is: it seems that a decision was taken to cover ninety percent of the art work on the ceiling and wall of the cathedral. You can actually see shadows of the frescos and mural through the layer of paint that conceal them. I was happy to learn that an attempt is being made to restore the art work with the assistance of Prof. Sanchez-Barriga from Spain. Funding is being sought for this project. It is said that the art work of the cathedral is the largest piece done by Bro. Schroen outside of Georgetown University, Washington DC. I hope this project will be successful because this is invaluable art work.
