Overview

Conveniently situated in the city center on the Wawel Hill, the royal home guarantees an invaluable lesson in Polish history. This was the seat of power from the 11th century until 1609 when the capital was transferred to Warsaw. Then occupied by Austrian troops, eventually, in 1930, the museum was opened in an attempt to recapture some of its former glory. Visitors admire a large collection of Renaissance furniture, paintings and jewelery. There is an armory with treasury inside the castle as well as other exhibitions in the surrounding chapels.

I love Poland!by Yahoo | 2008-06-20 12:04:48 |

I am not Polish -- I went for another reason, and ended up staying almost 5 mos. I fell in love with this country. From Rybnik in the south to Gdansk in the north, with many stops in between, this is a great country. The Polish people are kind, interesting and tend to love Americans -- everyone I met seemed to have a relative in the states. Most speak some English. (I only learned a few phrases of Polish). With many scenic spots, this country is ideal for vacation. Many Russians and Germans go to Poland to vacation because of its beauty. They are glad to tell you about the country, as are its residents. Ask anyone working in a hotel/motel for help, and they oblige. A little tipping goes a LONG way in getting you what you want! Much better service than in the States, too. Learn to say Thank You in Polish before you go, it opens doors!

I was there with my family only for 2 hours and I'll never forget about this place. Polish castles are great, but Wawel is amazing. You must go there :)

The Good Vibeby Yahoo | 2005-08-28 12:15:06 |

You can walk all around the Wawel mound and grounds for free. You only need a ticket to go into the indoor exhibits. Tread softly--remember that the Poles consider the Wawel to be their national treasure. So walk around and linger by the Cathedral there: there's a very pleasant vibe that comes from underground there. Some have called it a "Chakra point", some have tried conducting scientific research on the phenomenon, but most visitors just remember having felt very...good...while visiting the Wawel. Enjoy!
