Overview

Along with Kamigamo, its sister shrine to the north, Shimogamo sponsors the annual May 15 "Aoi Matsuri" festival with an historical parade through the streets. Some of the participants are garbed in traditional yabusame horseback archery gear. The shrine's fragrant woods ensure a pleasant stroll in a sacred area dedicated to the god of good harvests and now a preserved UNESCO heritage site.
