Standing as a testimonial to the wealthy are the beautiful estates of the Baldwin, Pope and Heller families. These summer get-aways for the upper crust were built at the turn of the 20th century. Dextra Baldwin built his estate in 1921. The museum inside houses Washoe Indian artifacts and Baldwin family exhibits. The Pope estate is now an interpretive center offering historic tours and a living history program in the summer. The Heller, or Valhalla estate, built in 1924, was the summer stomping grounds of the rich and famous. Appointments are necessary to visit the homes, but admission is free. Plays, Indian celebrations and other events are also presented at the site. Call for information.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 10:00 AM to 04:30 PMIt's a beautiful area to visit. My fiance and I didn't get a chance to walk inside the log cabins; however, it was interesting to learn the daily lives of that time period by the information posts on the bike trail. It's worth visiting at no cost. FYI: There was a wedding reception being set up at the Valhalla estate. Looked gorgeous!!
These houses are neat and it is free to go through them (all but the Pope Esate). Interesting to see how people lived in the 20s in this area. Beautiful log home with a museum and gift shop. A small area dedicated to the Washoe Indians. Other buildings include some guest cabins, a working blacksmith building where you can purchase napkin rings and other things made there. Very neat garden with gazebo. Also a boat house. Worth the time to walk through.
Interesting place to see 'how the other half lived' at the turn of the century and up to the Depression, probably. Well preserved and curated displays of the homes and grounds of three wealthy families. Free to walk around, and entertainment most evenings.
This place can be magical if you go at the right time. There is plenty to see, and on a nice day in the summer, it is a great stop on your trip to Tahoe.
