Overview
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, located just a few miles west of Las Vegas, is named for the deep red 3,000-foot-high sandstone cliffs that are perched above the dusty wastelands of this part of the Mojave Desert. The view from any part of the park is breathtaking: mostly nature fills the view, but from some points you can make out the entire Las Vegas Strip in the distance! If the temperature is extremely hot, climbing/hiking/bicycling throughout the park is not recommended; instead, opt to drive around the park (expect to pay a small fee for motorized vehicles) along a 13-mile paved loop. A visitor's center provides information on area history, geology, flora and fauna (visitors may encounter burros, big horn sheep or desert tortoises). You can also pick up a map of the park with detailed hiking routes (beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels). Rangers offer guided tours at no charge -- see website for schedules. It's open daily at 6a.* Was the experience fun? * Would you recommend it to others? * Was it worth the time/money? * Aim for 2-3 paragraphs Things to avoid: * ALL CAPS * Off-topic or irrelevant comments * Personal attacks * Person

I had no idea this would affect me the way it did. When driving up to it, you see that you will be making a large loop through some rocks. but get on that loop, turn off your radio and open the windows and you are in a different world. Stunning. I wasn't prepared to get out and walk with sandals on, so I returned that afternoon with my husband and he was equally wow'd. Do get out and take a couple of paths. you will not regret it.
My husband and I visited Las Vegas. We loved Red Rock. It is worth the stop. So much to see in LV.
This is a beautiful area on the outskirts of Vegas that I visit frequently. You can hike or mountain climb here, or just simply take a drive around the loop and stop off at the viewpoints for a spectacular view. I highly recommend hiking one of their 15-20 trails they have available. They range in difficulty and distance (easy to difficult and 1/4 mile to several miles). I also recommend you visit the Visitor's Gift Shop since it also has a ton of educational information and a mini museum inside. Visit this first though, since you can't access it once you drive past it.
Given how close you are to Vegas, Red Rock is a surprise. I enjoy getting out and doing things where ever I go and Vegas is no exception. The chance to hike around the many well kept paths and route in Red Rock should not be missed. You can even take one route to the top of a rock formation and see the entire strip and Stratosphere Tower! It is a fabulous place not to be missed (and it is virtually free!!!).
The tour was so wonderful since all I thought about Las Vegas was the casinos and did not know about this natural wonder until someone told me it was something worthwhile, and it was. I would go again and do some hiking and bring a picnic lunch to just enjoy the beautiful colors. This is something that should not be missed when in Las Vegas.
Red Rock Canyon has beautiful rock colors. Also see the Valley of Fire also one hour from the Las Vegas Strip. Do not miss Death Valley which is the largest national park in the lower 48 states. Death Valley is in California and is approximately 4 hours from the Las Vegas Strip.
if you need a break from the tables and wish to enjoy nature, the red rock area is recommended, take a short drive of about 20 miles or so and enjoy an area full of sites to explore... there is a 13mile long scenic road, which takes you to many spots along the canyon for your hiking or viewing enjoyment. entrance to that road costs $5 as of feb 08. the visitor center offers information on the area and its wildlife...
very nice place to hike. easy to find and lots of nice rock formations. worth the drive from the city. the kids will love the trip so will the adults.
