Overview

The Markt, the main market square, is the most central point in Leipzig. It is the so-called Herz von Leipzig, the "heart of the city". Dominated by the splendid Renaissance façade of the famous Altes Rathaus, the face of the Markt has changed frequently over the centuries and was heavily damaged during the Second World War. Visitors can pass a pleasant moment in one of the many cafés and restaurants nearby. Large open-air events, concerts and festivals often take place here during the summer.
