Overview
The consecration stone was laid in 1874 and Princes Road Synagogue is now a Grade II listed building. The architects, W & G Audsley were specialists in synagogue designs and aimed for an Eastern perspective. The rose windows at either end of the synagogue are Romanesque and the domes and cupolas above the Ark are Byzantine. However, the external brickwork of the towers and windows are of Moorish design and the horseshoe-shaped internal arches are reminiscent of Spanish medieval architecture. An incredible building with lots of history well worth a visit. The rabbi is very welcoming and the secretary is very helpfull if you want to arrange a viewing/tour
the architecture is awe inspiring the talk given was fascinating a worthwhile experience for all
The Princes Road Synagogue, just a 20-30 minute walk from Liverpool city center, has to be one of this great city's undiscovered gems. Its austere exterior doesn't prepare the visitor for the splendours of the sumptious interior.Tours must be arranged in advance and are led by Dr Cecil Moss. An excellent guide, he is brimming over with stories of the synagogue and with his witty anecdotes reveals a mine of information about Judaism in general and Princes Road in particular. His love and admiration for this building is obvious and I could have listened to his explanations all day. The tour takes at least one hour but be prepared to stay longer. The gorgeous interior of the synagogue is a mixture of Eastern and Western styles and the craftsmanship is superb. For anyone who appreciates architecture of any form, it will be a delight.
