Overview

Every year on the last Sunday in January, this much-celebrated tradition takes place. Produced by the English Civil War Society, the colourful event commemorates the execution of King Charles I in 1649. In honour of his self-declared martyrdom, cavaliers dressed in 17th-century attire retrace his last walk from St. James's Palace through The Mall to the Banqueting House in Whitehall. Upon reaching the Banqueting House, a ceremony that includes wreath laying and prayers begins. Admission is free.
