Overview

The British Museum is one of London's top tourist attractions as well as a major scholarly resource. Its collection was bequeathed to the nation in 1753 and the Museum's distinctive Greek revivalist structure was built during the 19th Century. The collection expanded massively during the heyday of the British Empire, leading to the Museum's notoriety for plundering sources all over the globe and leaving it with over 6.5 million objects to look after. The displays cover about 14 acres and it is simply too tiring to tackle them all in one visit. The best way is to pick a collection or exhibition that interests you, explore that, and make return visits. And if you haven't got time for a proper visit, drop in for a coffee at the lovely Court Restaurant. Admission is free but charges may be made for temporary exhibitions.

Open Hours

Don't Miss the British Museum!by Yahoo | 2007-03-18 17:17:24 |

I spent half a day in the British Museum and I could have easily spent several days there. It is AMAZING the things that you will find there: Mummies galore, including Cleopatra's mummy. The Rosetta stone! A 5,000 year old Oblisk. Artifacts from ancient Greece and Rome. The list of treasures goes on and on. This is an amazing place not to be missed. And the price is right: Free!

You can't miss thisby Yahoo | 2006-11-17 13:16:34 |

The British Museum is a fantastic museum and a beautiful building on its own. If you love museums, you'll love the BM. If you're not a big museum fan, spend a little less time there, but don't miss it. It's free, so even if you have half an hour to spare, make sure you drop by and see what the BM has to offer.

A must see for All. They robbed the world for this place, & the art made me weep. I am a big museum buff, but The British Museum is by far the best museum I have ever been.

I am a history major and this is by far the best musuem I have ever been to. Large collections from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt are a must see for even a non-history student. Check out the pub across the street from the sun garden for a good meal and pint.

I love this Museum! It's free to get in and there are so many attractions! You could easily spend a whole day here, or even more! There is a restaurant/ cafeteria or bring a lunch and sit outside on the beautiful lawn! A definite must see!

An absolute MUST placeby Yahoo | 2005-04-27 09:11:52 |

A MUST for all London visitors, also would recommend to see the (in)famous Elgin marbles, absolutely breathtaking ! Have plenty of time to see everything, a whole day the least. Atmosphere wonderful, and the staff most helpful. Take yourself to another era and time.

this museum is massive! allow yourself a big block of time if you intend to see all the exhibits. you could even spend some time one day and view the rest another day. the best of it all...it's free!

Overwhelmingby Yahoo | 2004-08-30 00:31:57 |

For the history buff, the British Museum is the best deal in London, since it's FREE! It is humongous, and the best way to tackle the museum is to get a map, pick the parts of the museum that interest you most, see them, and come back for more another day. Or, if you're on a tight schedule like we were, find the marquee sights (Elgin Marbles, Rosetta Stone, most of the ancient Egypt exhibit), and see them. Definitely a fun house of history, but more general than other historical heavyweights like Westminster Abbey or the Tower of London.
