Overview

Charles Dickens' novels famously chronicled the lives and dramas of 19th century London in the throes of the industrial revolution, and his portrayal of slums and workhouses drew on his own family's experiences of poverty and debt. The drawing room of the Dickens' House where he held literary salons has been lovingly restored, and elsewhere you can view all manner of Dickens paraphernalia including personal letters and notes as well as manuscripts and first editions of his books.

Extremely interestingby Yahoo | 2008-08-04 05:06:46 |

The house/museum is pretty much as it must have been in Dicken's time. It was the first home he had as a married man and he was proud of it. Of course, the rooms are very small--except for the drawing room which extends the width of the house on the first floor. There are cases displaying actual handwritten texts of some of his books, and the writing is teeny tiny--but so is the print of the published books. People must have had good eyesight to read these by candle light. It is amazing how the women in their crinolines and petticoats could manage to get up and down the steep and narrow stairs. The kitchen premises in the basement are also as they must have been, and so very difficult to cook and clean in. The house gives a good idea of the discomforts of Victorian living. As I recall there are posters advertising some of Dicken's events, The museum is a bit out of the way, but well worth visiting if you are in London and enjoy a bit of a walk to get there.

Sadly disappointedby Yahoo | 2007-07-18 09:34:13 |

I had been looking forward to exploring the Dickens Museum, however it was a good example of how not to do museums. It was fusty, poorly laid out and very little to look at and learn. There seemed to be no common thread to the rooms and certainly no interactivity. There was no explanation for why items were there and what there were. Don't waste your money.
