Overview

Tate Britain is a part of the Tate Gallery in Britain. Opened in 1897, its edifice is beautiful and palatial with huge columns, and stone sculptures adorning the roof. Exhibiting Britain art from 1500 to present, the gallery is also known for its support of new and contemporary multimedia artists. The modern art on display ranges from the Pre-Raphaelite period to Cubism. Giacometti, Picasso, Moore, Hepworth and Warhol are among those on show, and the gallery also annually exhibits the artists that are short-listed for the Turner Prize.

I recently attended the Tate Britain with a school party of students aged 11-16. It was obvious from our arrival that the staff were uncomfortable with school parties. The staff were rude, belligerent and patronising. I am writing to my M.P.to ask the question if the Tate is an art gallery for all not a gallery for private viewings. The only area our students were not made to feel unwelcome was the shop. I wonder why? Thank you staff of Tate Britain for making our students feel that art is not an area they can be part of or interested in.

I particularly like the Tate Britain because the art is so cleverly hung. You can stand or sit and gaze at a painting or sculture that has taken your eye and become completely lost in it, without your eyeline being distracted by anything hung too close. I often visit the Tate Britain for exactly this relaxing pasttime, and have been fortunate enough to learn a little from eavesdropping on the passing guides. So I love the Tate's cool, relaxing atmosphere - the National just does not do the same for me, its art hustling and pressing for my attention, one painting loudly distracting from the one I'm trying to study. No, no, the Tate for me every time!

I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to art, but from what little I do know, I really enjoyed the Tate Britain. Beyond being a beautiful building itself, it houses a large collection of important and magnificent British art that I spent hours admiring. Definitely worth your time.
