It's a nice respite from an otherwise fairly desolate downtown area. I remember the gift shop better than the art, but that likely says more about me than the museum.
It took us about 45 minutes to find parking on a sunday afternoon... it seemed larger than it really was but the atmosphere was very drawing.... there was music, expert kids on the whatever subject u were interested in. Tickets costed 8 dollars each. The exposition overalll deserves an 8... there was a lot of photographs.. videos and a variety of painting that could have u there for at least 10 minutes trying to figure out the whole scene. For those that enjoy music, saturdays are special, they have artist on the inside... outside and people willing to help out in any way. What i did not like about it was the fact that we could not use cell phones or digital cameras to take pictures.., so.. don't get all packed up because they're all going to be running after u for the film ifu do...
MOCA focuses on the period of art that i'm most interested in (late 19th century and beyond) so it's a little surprising that it's not really my favorite museum in the area. for one thing, it's a little on the small side, or somehow the exhibitions never seem to be as comprehensive as what they have at SFMOMA. in addition, it's really kind of difficult to get out to MOCA. downtown l.a. is kind of a maze, and MOCA has a fairly confusing entrance (if you approach from the wrong side, you have to walk around a huge city block to get to the entrance). i think there's underground parking, but somehow i've always found it to be a pain to get there.
