The name Macau was taken from A-Ma-Gao (Bay of A-Ma) where this temple stands. Legend has it that A-Ma was a poor girl traveling to China but was turned away by wealthy junk owners. Finally, a fisherman took her to Macau, surviving a storm that sunk all the other junks. Later, she reappeared to the fisherman as a goddess and so he built her this temple. Situated on the southern tip of Macau, the temple has a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and a steady stream of worshipers pray.D place resembles some kind of heritage, u can easily feel d 'age' of d temple. By just looking @ d no. of people going to d temple, u will realize how much d local ppl respect d goddess.
It was fun back in the 80's but after 20 years, it has lost its charm. A lot of attractions (eg. the waterpark) were closed when I visited. I think it is going downhill because it doesn't get enough visitors to keep it well maintained. If you haven't been to this park before...it is worth going to...I guess...for the sake of being able to say that you've been there.
The medium size temple is the most famous in Macau. The goddess A-Ma protected the fisherman. See how the locals continue to pay their respects including the good luck turtles (who I wish were in bigger cages). Next door is a great Portuguese restaurant called A Lorcha.
A-ma temple is an excellent temple experience and a significant location for local and chinese history. Tourists interested in history and local religious customs, this is a must stop. It's a good break from the Casino's that seem to be diluting the rich culture this small enclave has to offer
