Erected over the palisade of the last king of pre-Hispanic Manila, Fort Santiago embodied the military might of Spanish colonial rule for over three centuries. It was occupied by British forces for a two-year period in the 18th century and by American colonial authorities after Spain surrendered the Philippines to the U.S.A in 1898. Destroyed during World War II, Fort Santiago was restored into a "Shrine of Freedom" following a 1950 governmental decree. Fort Santiago contains many points of historical interest.irish married to philipina, allthough based in the provinces always take time out to visit here, usually with children of the family.a good introduction to philipino history.with special emphasis on rizal.thera are a few touristy things there but not at all overwhelming.if you are a foreign tourist and wish to be left alone the polite philipinos usually do.one comment i would like to make thoughis that the philipino,s national hero,is not a soldier, politician,or royalty,he is a poet. veryneat
i like the athmosphere, the buildings, the sites ,the stories behind those sights and the stories of what life was like before and also how people lived before
If you are in Manila this is a must see. Very nice place with Filipino history. Not to far from the US embassy and safe place
the "mana" of the whole area---soaked in phillipine history---a real eyeopener to where u guys came from and the atrocities that have befallen your lovely country god bless u all ---george
