Overview

Unique in Asia, this was a European-style medieval fortified city that functioned as the seat of government from 1571 to 1898. The massive walls stretch some 4.5 kilometers, enclosing a 64-hectare area once occupied by palaces, churches, monasteries, schools and wealthy residences ('Intramuros' means 'inside the walls'). Sadly, the whole city was razed to the ground by bombings conducted by American forces when they recaptured Manila from the Japanese in 1945. Today most of the walls, gates and bulwarks have been restored, affording visitors a glimpse into the past.

The disgrace of the Rizal Museumby Yahoo | 2008-09-28 01:35:29 |

In Fort Santiago - there is a musuem of Rizal - it is nicely done but then one is askd to sign a visitor's book whih also includes a list of donations patently over written by the monkey who stays there - showing that other visitors have given like 2000 php donations Donations for what ? I would like to know - one already pai to enter the fort - there is no information about what these donations are for? For the money who writes in later that I lft a donation of php 2000? Utter disgrace - same with the furniture museum - an entrance charge written on a sign by hand asking for php 10 - for who and for what ? again the management have no control over the staff Then there is a new sports complex being built next to the walls in concrete - could no be more inappropriate next to the early spanish walls Whole place is a disgrace and Rizal's role in the independence movement isnt just exagerated - it is down right wrong

Great historical funby Yahoo | 2008-07-05 05:11:29 |

Right in the heart of Manila's ocean front area. most of the old fort is open to expore unguided. They have a very nice shrine to Rizal. Its wonderful to walk the walls of the fort, and look out and imagine what Manila was like back in the colonial days. Still have some old cannons over looking the Pasig river. The churchs and statues are impressive also. Horse drawn carriges are avalible. Good place for souvineer shopping and picture taking. Some old spanish buildings still remain and also of course if your hungry they do have fast food in the old city.

Intramuros Is Worth Seeingby Yahoo | 2008-01-29 23:04:18 |

If you visit Intramuros, be sure to visit Fort Santiago and see the Rizal Museum there. Also be sure to see the very impressive San Augustin Cathedral, which is one of the oldest churches in the country, and which used to be a monastery. This is well worth the 75 pesos that it costs to get in to the church. The Manila Cathedral, also well worth a look, is free admission, and frequently holding Mass.

Amazing part of townby Yahoo | 2007-05-30 20:21:27 |

Intramuros was definately one of the highlights of my trip. So rich in history but yet kept up very well. Visited this area several times while I spent 4 months there for work. Great shopping as well right outside the front entrance and it's just for tourists with mostly native Filipino items.

Intramurosby Yahoo | 2007-03-13 14:31:10 |

hmmm some viewers says its not good and some says its good. as for me, i think intramuros has its own history IF YOU LOOK UP INSTEAD U LOOK DOWN FOR THE RUBBISH. i always love other culture mix of spanish, asian derived. intramuros indeed shows us what was before and honestly i love being there. they show how jose rizal last day before he was shot to death, brought along to Luneta...it was a true moment when i followed the path of rizal's 'foot-steps'for execution. i wud love to be there again when i visit manila. hopefully
