One of Manila's most famous churches, Quiapo Church gets very crowded every Friday when thousands of devotees come to light a candle in supplication to the Black Nazarene, a life-size image of Christ believed to be miraculous. Around the church is a fascinating gathering of vendors selling candles and curiosities like amulets and folk cures for obscure ailments. The present cream-colored edifice was built after the original Mexican Baroque structure burned to the ground in 1928.I liked the outdoor markets and electronics. WWhenever I took a bus into Manila for some reason & wanted a bus back to Dasmiriñas I went to Quiapo to get a seat on an A/C bus since the route starts there. The biggest problem was all the flower and electronics bargains. Often I would overload & have too much to carry. The heat is ALWAYS oppressive (but this IS The Philippines afterall). If quiet is your thing, look elsewhere! Every purveyor of electronics plays his louder than the shop next door & so the noise is just an unintelligible din.

Quiapo Church Religious Site, Quiapo Be the First to Rate It East of Binondo, not far from the foot of Quezon Bridge and facing Plaza Miranda -- where orators of varying skills and persuasions harangue passersby -- is this 16th-century church. Its crowded environs are as close to an authentic Philippine neighborhood as you can get in Manila. On side streets vendors sell amulets and herbal cures for a wide variety of ailments. The church is home to the famed Black Nazarene, a dark hardwood statue of Jesus of Nazareth made by a Mexican craftsman and brought via galleon from Mexico in the 18th century. Many believe that praying to the statue can produce miracles. It isn't unusual to see supplicants crawling on their knees from the entrance to the altar. As part of the Quiapo Fiesta, each January 9 the Nazarene is paraded through the district's narrow streets by bare-chested male devotees who compete for the honor of pulling the float that carries the statue. OPEN: Daily 6 AM-8 PM.
