Overview

One of the most visited tourist spots in the Philippines, this geological phenomenon is actually a volcano within a lake within a volcano. Taal is the world's smallest volcano, but do not let appearances deceive you--it can be quite deadly when it erupts. A 45-minute ride on a banca (wooden boat) will take you to the volcano; a 15-minute trek will take you to the top of the crater. An older and larger volcano is an hour away, which requires the assistance of an experienced guide.

Never go thereby Yahoo | 2009-01-14 08:34:01 |

The people there are so money concious and everything is so expensive. They made me pay as much as 9000 peso for one person and wanted me to pay more as tips. Dont forget to bring a raincoat for the scariest and wettest ride of your life. The people there always want tips so it is better if you walk. It is much faster but bring a mask because of the sand. The volcano is very beautiful if you reach there. And it is better if you get a genuine tour agency like in hotels like Shang-ri-La.Thats all for now. Bai!

i like this place because its so spacious and the air is just nice and cold. the view is BREATH TAKING. go to pancake house and get a henna for free if you pay 30 pesos to the nice guy. at night the lights and sounds are MAGICAL! everything was moving. the street lights were so bright that it was making me look white. like white people. the experience was so nice that words cannut describe my feelings. :)

Plan well for a Taal Tripby Yahoo | 2008-01-29 23:22:47 |

When you go to hike to the rim of Taal Volcano you will most likely go through Tagaytay which, while not on the direct path, is where most of the tour operators work out of. If you avoid Tagaytay and the "bargain" pushers there, you can go straight to Talisay City and go to almost any hotel and there will be bangka boat operators that will offer you a trip to the island. Avoid any costs not directly associated with the hike, to include food, refreshments, etc. The price simply isn't worth it. They know foreigners from the world over go to Taal to hike it, and they are making very good money pushing their food and refreshments. Bring some like snacks and plenty of water. If you choose to hike and you are in good shape as I am, you can easily make it to the rim in 45 minutes. A tired old horse can also get you to the rim, but walking is literally just as fast, though the single advantage of a horse is that you don't have to walk in the very, VERY dusty trail. But then, the horse makes it boring. If you DO take a horse, expect to pay 800-1000 pesos for one. If you don't, be prepared to resist the onslaught of tour guides ready with their horses, and they will follow you a third of the way up the mountain trying to get you to pay for one, or a big, ridiculous, "I'm a tourist" sombrero. If you go during the dry season, bring sunscreen, as there is absolutely zero shade during the entire trek. The only shade is at the top under a rest station that sells coconuts, water, and some other Filipino drinks. Once at the top the tour guide (you are required to get a tour guide to take you to the top, and this is only about 500 pesos, and actually it's worth it because he can tell you about the locals, the flora, the volcano, and recommend good trails) will ask you if you want to go down to the bottom. They will tell you this will take 2 - 2.5 hours, but that's nonsense if you're in good shape. A hike to the very bottom of the volcano and back up only takes about 45 minutes each way if you're in shape. It will cost you another 500-1000 pesos for the tour guide, but again, it's worth it. Taal Volcano is worth the trip. Just avoid the tourist hustlers. Buy water BEFORE you get to the island, as the water there is expensive. Also, save your appetite for food for a visit to Tagaytay, where you can get much better prices. All in all, my trip to Taal was well worth the visit. Just remember to bargain for your bangka boat price and to bring stuff with you.

A visit to a unique place.by Yahoo | 2008-01-03 21:37:12 |

It was very interesting. The place was neat and clean. Attendants were gracious and informative. It was certainly worth the visit. My visit was in Oct 1986.

The view of Taal is by far in my top ten places to see in this world. I was just in Manila last month for the first time and am visiting again in two days. I will definetly make a stop to visit again. Simply put, breathtaking.

Unforgetable Experienceby Yahoo | 2007-11-12 00:34:06 |

If you go there you will know then why you will never forget this beautiful place. The scenery is breathtaking. The boat ride across the lake and the horse ride up to the volcano was an experience. Anyone staying in the Manila area should definitely go see the Taal Volcano and Lake. I thought this outing to be a great adventure for the time and money well spent.

Just 2-3 hours south of Manila so it is easy to get to. The best part is that Taygaytay is 1,200 meters above sea level so it is cooler and less humid than Manila. It can get a little chilly at night. Beautiful scenery. The flowers markets are great. If I were to live in the Philippines I would certainly consider Taygaytay. Stayed at Taal Vista. A 5 star hotel with very good food. You get real good service by the staff. Be sure to stay at a hotel on the rim so you can see the volcano/lake from either the restaurants or you room. A great romantic getaway for those special occasions. I was there during October/November and the weather was great.
