Overview
Real-estate developer José Banús took three years to build this famous marina and it was formally opened in 1970 by Prince Rainier of Monaco and his wife, Grace Kelly. It cost EUR5,499,260 and has room for 550 motor boats and yachts. It was designed as an exclusive harbor only, but has since turned into one of the Costa del Sol's major upmarket leisure areas and night-spots. It's now surrounded by expensive restaurants, outdoor cafes, bars and shops that give it the air of a well-planned market place.Posh...but beautiful.
Puerto Banus (or just 'Banus') is very calm and peaceful during the off season, but from May until late August, it is the prime party spot on the Costa del Sol. The only place in southern Spain that can compete with the partying that goes on here is Ibiza. Expect to see plenty of Maserattis and Ferraris, parked beside the yacht-lined strip, and to pay 10 euros ($12) per drink. Banus during the summer would best be described as the Spanish version of Nice, France. This area is not called the Spanish Riviera for nothing. Expect to be up until sun-up if you're going to party here...not for the faint of heart!
