The lighthouse, on the bluffs near the historic town of Oak Bluffs, has been standing since the 1800s. The present tower, standing at 40 feet, was constructed in 1875, but the original dwellings and outbuildings have since been demolished. The gleaming white tower was painted a deep, chocolate brown in the past. The flashing green light serves as a marker for the U.S. Coast Guard. The grounds are open to the public and the interior is occassionally open for tours. It is presently operated by the Martha's Vineyard Historical Society. It's MY lighthouse130 years old and it's not the original!
I can see it shine from my backyard on Crystal Lake. More home to me. On my desktop wallpaper at work (a Ray Ellis print)
Historic East Chop Lighthouse is a wonderful stop on your exhilarating walk around East Chop Drive. Make sure that you stop for a guided tour (Sundays for the 3 warmer seasons if I recall). Great History. Ask one of the locals to show you which area houses have moved around the immediate area over the past 125 years.
