Overview
The south-west coast of Victoria offers one of the most spectacular drives in the world. Winding roads, plunging cliffs, eucalyptus studded hillsides, primeval rain forests, wind-battered oceans and tales of piracy and shipwreck all feature in a drive along the famed Great Ocean Road. Built between 1918 and 1932 by about 3,000 ex-servicemen; the project was dedicated to those who died in World War I. The road stretches from Anglesea to Warrnambool and includes many highlights such as the much photographed Twelve Apostles, seaside villages and the magnificent Otway Ranges and Port Campbell National Park.Beautiful!A great driveDown Under Wonderbeautiful drive
Self-tour with rental car was beautiful. Breaking ocean waves, rock formations, little beach towns along the way. Drive south in the morning and north in the evening for best viewing.
Truly one of the great drives in the world. The ocean views, the surfers at Bells Beach, the forests, the nature hikes, the small towns, the waterfalls, and the Twelve Apostles. Plus most of it is less than a days drive from Melbourne. My only advice would be to book your hotel or B&B room in advance if you travel on a holiday weekend.
Fantastic scenery all along the coast, but especially at the 12 apostles.Best of all it is all free thanks to the Australian taxpayers!
eucalyptus hills on one side--ocean on the other! stunning! drive may make you queasy
