Overview

Across from the Walker Art Center sits what many consider one of the boldest and most unique displays of art in the country, if not the entire world. Inaugurated in 1988, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a showcase for more than 40 works of art including major sculptures by George Segal, Ellsworth Kelly, Jenny Holzer, Henry Moore and Franz Lipschitz. The entrance to the 11-acre garden is bordered by Ampersand, a pair of colossal granite columns by Martin Puryear. During the warmer months, the 300-foot stainless steel arbor planted with a variety of blooming plants and colorful flowers is spectacular. The garden's centerpiece is the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture and fountain by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. The 55-foot spoon topped by a 15-foot red bing cherry is the garden's most famous display. The Garden is open year round. Even in the dead of winter, visitors make the trek to the Cowles Conservatory on the west side of garden to view the changing display of blooming plants. The small conservatory is also home to a Frank Gehry-designed giant fish with scales of glass that rests on its tail in a pond surrounded by orange trees.

Pay for parking and you are inby Yahoo | 2007-09-18 14:09:56 |

Paying a couple dollars (I want to say it's under $2) for parking in the always open lot next to the gardens, and you have full access to the cherry on a spoon, as well as many other beautiful pieces. This is also the home to green houses containing amazing plant life mixed with art work, and the walking bridge that leads you over Lyndale/Hennepin to Loring Park. Great hour or two adventure for the tourist or art enthusiast.

Great way to experience art.by Yahoo | 2007-06-08 14:22:45 |

I loved that the sculptures were out in nature. My kids had a great time running from sculpture to sculpture and looking at all of the art. There are "hidden" sculptures around some of the hedges and they are nice surprises. It was very easy to get to, even as first time visitors. Now that we are moving to the area I am sure it will be a special place for us as a family.

Great way to spend an hour!by Yahoo | 2007-05-26 00:42:02 |

Wow, wow, and wow! I'm no art critic, but I had a fantastic time. The spoon was certainly my favorite part, but it was all lovely. The poem on the bridge is worth reading. And you get quite a view of the entire garden from up there. I'd certainly go again!

it was greatby Yahoo | 2007-04-19 19:02:55 |

I loved the fact that it is outside and you get to view some very interesting pieces of art and there is a great view too.

This garden was absoultly wonderful. The kids and I enjoyed it very much. Its not very often you can find a place where you can enjoy art and actually have the kids enjoy it too. They loved the glass fish, the spoon and various other sculptures. Then they enjoyed walking over the highway and then visiting the park across the street. Very relaxing afternoon where we had lots of fun and enjoyment.

Soak It In!by Yahoo | 2006-09-15 21:07:23 |

The only thing I didn't like about this lovely Sculpture Garden located close to downtown was its small size. I wanted more! That being said, I enjoyed the intimacy of the setting. It seems to me that most sculpture belongs outside, and this venue makes the pieces come alive. Part of the fun is seeing other patrons, particularly children, interact with the pieces. Don't miss the Gehry glass fish inside the Conservatory. A great place to spend the morning while you're waiting for the Walker Art Center next door to open.

This place has everybody's favourite view of downtown Minneapolis - the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture against the backdrop of the Minneapolis skyline. Absolutely picture perfect! There are many other unique sculptures in the garden, but only the Spoonbridge and Cherry really had me going back to it again and again.
