Situated between the train station, the historic city center and the Polygone shopping center, this immense, pedestrianized square is the heart and soul of Montpellier. Deriving its name from the first theater built in the 18th Century on the site of what is now the Opéra, this expansive square is the site of major open-air shows and daily street entertainment. At the center of the square, beneath the handsome facades of the surrounding 19th Century buildings, is the fountain of the Three Graces.I studied in Montpellier for nearly a year in 04/05 and it was one of the best experiences of my life. I walked through Place de la Comédie at least twice every single day during that time, and I can honestly say it truly is the heart and soul of the city. The square never stops buzzing, whatever time of day or night. All throughout the year there is a Saturday market on the tree-lined walkway on the east-side of the square and in December there is a fabulous Christmas market right in the centre. In the summer it can get very hot on the square in the afternoon due to the shiny tiling on the esplanade, but it's a perfect excuse to sit under shade at one of the many café's and watch the city go by you. I recommend Café Riche for amazing salads! Overall I would highly recommend a visit to Montpellier at any time of year, and no visit to the city would be complete without a trip here!
I originally went to college in Montpellier in the 80's. Re-visiting La Place de la Comedie was really exciting for me. The bars/cafes are a great way to write postcards and just relax. It's so much fun to watch the families and couples walking around (a favorite past time on Sundays in particular). It is a great place to take pictures and explore the little tiny roads off La Place. Enjoy!
Great place to people watch. Beautiful buildings surround the area. Lots of trees.
Truly one of the best experiences we had in Europe. The saturday Market is a must to see. Sitting at one of the Outdoor Cafe's and watch the people go by is just great. Even shopping at MONOPRIX is a treat. We had the best Beef in Europe there. A good value is the Ibis Hotel, which is in walking distanceto the Place de la Comedie.
