Not the most extensive or impressive of the catacombs of Naples, but worth a side trip on the way to Capodimonte or the San Gennaro catacombs. There's a public elevator down to the Piazza Sanita from Corso Amedeo. The entrance setting distinguishes this site, over which spans a splendid Baroque double staircase surmounted by the altar and organpipes of Santa Maria di Sanita. Leviathan-like, the necropolis gapes toward the viewer, while above and around is the promise of salvation bourne upward on the beautiful curvatures of the church. The effect was not lost even on a lapsed neolithic pagan such as myself! PS: A minimum of two people is required for a tour of the catacomb. I was there alone, and had to recruit another visitor to get in.
