Two hundred years ago, Vendue House was the site of the local slave auctions. The house now serves as a museum of local history and culture, specifically of slave culture and the history of emancipation in the Bahamas. The museum is located in downtown Nassau, approximately a block from the British Colonial Hotel. It's best to call before making a special trip here as the hours of operation are short and subject to change.Open Hours
Su to We from 09:30 AM to 04:30 AM, Th from 09:30 AM to 01:00 PM, Fr from 09:30 AM to 04:30 PM, Sa from 09:30 AM to 03:30 PMThis was the first such collection of real information about slavery that I have ever seen put together. There are news clips, punishment tools (flogs)and incarceration tools (neck collars and hand cuffs etc), paintings depicting the voyage to the americas, manuscripts and many other items I have never seen in any museum I have ever visited around the world. This is a must-see for all humans to see how horrible humanity can be when greed and power take over. I am a white person and am embarassed at what our ancestors did to our fellow men. The museum is small and everything is well laid out. The museum staff are friendly and grateful that we took the time to visit this exhibit. You can go through it very quickly, but the message we learn is strong.
My family and I visited the Pompey Museum in December of 2006. I was a very enlightening expericence. The displays were well done. The staff as very friendly and helpful. I cannot wait till they expand in the future. I was saddened not to be able to take pictures or at least be able to by books or pictures of their items on display.
