The Cathedral of St. Louis IX, King of France, began as a minor basilica, but became an established parish in 1720. The graceful beauty of the St. Louis Cathedral and its surrounding courtyards makes it a sight to behold. Located on a bank of the Mississippi River, the cathedral is considered one of the greatest symbols of Catholicism on the North American continent! It is open Monday to Saturday 7:30a onwards.Tour is free and the cathedral is beautiful. It is on Jackson square and within walking distance to the french quarter. A great place to visit.
I AM NOT CATHOLIC, BUT WE WERE WELCOMED IN ANYWAY, AND WITH OPEN ARMS. A WONDERFUL PLACE. THE ART ON THE CEILING IS WORTH GOING. GO & LIGHT A CANDLE FOR THE CITIZENS OF THIS GREAT CITY!!! IT'S ONLY $2 TO DO SO, SO WHY NOT? NICE STAFF & GIFT SHOP TOO.
It is truly fitting that Jackson Square, undoubtedly the heart and soul of New Orleans, is dominated by the majestic St Louis Cathedral. Located within the French Quarter and a short walk from the CBD, it is difficult to miss this beautiful piece of architecture. The best place for a photo is from the top of the staircase towards the river. And while you are here, do take some time to enjoy Jackson Square, which is constantly energized by the colorful jazz musicians and out-of-this-world entertainers.
Nice photo shot from Riverwalk entrance. Take it and move on to Jackson Square. Jackson Square is the Bourbon Street of the daytime New Orleans. See my review.
A beautiful cathedral..really interesting to see the sidewalk vendors as you leave the cathedral...kind of ironic.
Wonderful...Jackson Square is fantastic and the Cathedral at its head is beautiful!
It is worth visiting at two different times. Why: 1) The natural lighting through the stained glass varies from daen to dusk. 2) You will notice something the second time you did not notice the first.
