Overview

Brooklyn's Coney Island, or the more dialectical term of Rabbit Island, exploded in the late 19th and early 20th-century following the introduction of the Coney Island & Brooklyn Railroad streetcar line. Since then the area was swamped with new resorts and attractions, including the ever-famous Luna Park. Following the decline of World War II and the years of neglect the park endured after, the area has burst back into life and is home to Astroland Amusement Park, the Aquarium and of course, the beach. A three-mile-long boardwalk runs the length of Coney Island into Brighton Beach. There is sometimes a circus, and always something strange to see. Also, Don't let the cooler months deter you from visiting- it is much less crowded, and the stores remain open.

Oh, how i miss those days!by Yahoo | 2008-12-31 21:51:41 |

I spent many a summer at Coney Island. My Grandmother lived there. I have so many wonderful memories. A long time ago, in the 1940's and 50's, was the best. We spent days at the beach, then at night, we'd go up on the boardwalk, and to the rides. I will never forget Coney Island, as that was some of the best times in my life. And oh, Nathan's and Shatzkin's knishes! I can taste them now. Please bring Coney back to life again! Why not make it like Atlantic City, with hotels, etc.

Tuesday Night Fireworks!by Yahoo | 2008-07-13 18:23:57 |

Growing up in Brooklyn, NY it was a great adventure to spend the day at Coney Island, walk the boardwalk until dark, and then stay for the weekly fireworks display. Imagine, fireworks every Tuesday night during the summer! What could be better than this? One Tuesday our family had an extra special treat. My Dad had a friend with a boat. We were able to go out on the Atlantic and watch the fireworks while we faced the lights of Coney Island. That was a night I'll never forget back in 1959. (Sorry, the dates given in this form do not go back as far as my memories go.)

It ain't south beach, but I love its NY flavourby Yahoo | 2007-09-03 13:57:43 |

IF you are expecting Miami's South Beach or California's Venice Beach then sorry this isn't it. However, step back in time and that's the feeling you get from Coney Island, a little trashy, a little cheesy and you're on your way. An old style fairground, blended with a boardwalk - with probably the best people watching available anywhere. And that's Coney Island. While you are there, go on the beach ( it's safe, the people won't bite) and check out the snake man. Catch a base ball game at the Cylcones and go to the world class aquarium. You don't need to take a $60 tour, just get on the subway and relax and enjoy it. You'll have the best fun ever. Now why did I give it only 4 stars, at night its a little shakey. Which is why you head over the little odessa in the Russian section and eat, drink and be merry over there after dark.

It's a great place to take the kids. They played on the beach during the day and early evening they played at the carnival. the next day we played at the aquarium.

Good Ol'e Coney Islandby Yahoo | 2007-05-24 18:49:23 |

Coney Island Is one of the greatest places to visit in the summer days. We have numerous attractions such as, the cyclone, wonder wheel, go karts, kiddie park and lot's more. We have a large variety of places to eat such as, famous Nathans, Popeye chicken place,Macdonald's and many more. We have a long stretched board walk with fire works every Friday nights. People please remember Coney Island is a place to visit in the summer days. Also keep in mind this is the last season for Coney Island Developers will be closing it down to make room for something different. So for those who love The Old Coney Island make sure you come out before it is no more.... A long time resident of Coney Island. Doreen

Where amusement parks all started!by Yahoo | 2006-07-10 19:31:47 |

Put historical Coney Island into perspective -- although only a mere shadow of it's early 1900s grand former self, the Coney Island of today maintains some staple attractions (Cyclone roller coaster, Wonder Wheel, B&B Carrousel). The boardwalk area has a feel that is uniquely New York City!! Do not visit expecting Disneyworld. Here you'll find old-fashioned thrills - stripped down and no-frills (and no BS)! Add in classic boardwalk attractions (like the Freak Show) and the Mermaid Parade, and you have a classic example of Americana. Highly recommended for fans of history and kitsch.
