Overview
The Apollo Theater is a distinguished and legendary landmark in Harlem. It originally opened as a burlesque hall to an all-white audience in 1913, but in the 1930s it became home to legendary jazz greats like Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. The theater has been restored, and every Wednesday at 7:30pm the stage is opened to amateurs; when heckling is not just common, but expected. There are also musical performances held on other nights. Admission varies. Call for details.Upcoming Events Near Apollo Theater

Great Theater, I was happy to see that there was a Starbucks, Disney Store and a Gap there just like the song goes. now we all can go to 125th Street.
Those seats must be the same ones they had in 1965. My god I thought I was have a pinch nerve in both my knees.I
Visiting the Apollo Theater - especially being guided on a class tour with Mr. Mitchell is an awesome experience. Mr. Mitchell is really Mr. Harlem. He began working at the theater as a "goffer" and worked his way up to Manager of Tours. He is insightful, provocative, fascinating, has had personal relations with the likes of Jackie Wilson, Patti LaBelle, the lady who taught him how to spell, R.E.S.P.E.C.T., Smokey Robinson, Duke Ellington and other giants of music who crossed the infamous stage in Harlem. He delightfully shares the history of this memorable site and students are allowed to come onto the stage, rub the "tree of hope" and perform. What a delightful, exciting and exhilarating experience - not only as a Black History activity - but as a general historical excursion as well! Try it... you will enjoy it!
