One of the many treasures to be found within Central Park, this beautiful restored carousel is made up of huge, hand-carved and hand-painted jumping horses. It is simple, old-fashioned and children of all ages adore it. A carousel was originally placed in the park in 1871. The current carousel has been on this site since 1951 (although it is much older than that). You can take your children to one of the many playgrounds located throughout the park.
I had planned a proposal to my then girlfriend in New York City for a few months and when we got to the city, nothing seemed to went right. I considered several landmarks in New York as the site for my proposal but due to bad weather and various circumstances, I was unable to find the perfect moment and place. Then after a day of touring in the city we arrived at the Central Park. It was a nice Spring day and the park was filled with people. Unable to find a quite corner to propose I was getting a bit annoyed. Walking around the baseball diamonds we saw the Carousel. My fiancee became very excited and wanted to go on the ride. She told me she has always loved the merry go rounds since she was a kid. I found my perfect place to propose. With kids and families laughing and having a good time around us, I told her how much I would love to have kids someday and bring them to the Carousel while we were on our horses. As the ride started to slow down, I asked her to marry me. She said yes but gave me the wrong hand because she was totally surprised and stunned. We laughed about it and stumbled out of the Carousel, not believing what had just happened. We promised each other to back there for 10 year wedding anniversary, with kids if possible. We'll never forget the ride at the Central Park Carousel...
I used to come to this carousel when I was a little girl and was very excited to bring my children to it. My son was 7 and my daughter was 4 at the time we went and they loved it. it was slighly expensive for a carousel (but not expensive for nyc)I think we went on it about 8 times. the horses are still beautiful, music is classic and it was very nice. It is a fast carousel compared to others we have been on--or so it seems. If you are in the area of this central park wonder, you should visit!
