Overview
This massive cathedral, situated across from Rockefeller Center on Fifth Avenue, is the largest Catholic cathedral in the United States. With its two soaring 330-foot spires, St. Patrick's Cathedral is also one of the city's most spectacular architectural sights. Construction on the neo-gothic structure had started in 1850 and completed in 1878. Inside, it boasts a seating capacity of 2,500, numerous altars and stained glass windows, and a giant organ with over 7,300 pipes. Services are held throughout the day, and many New Yorkers stop in for a moment of serenity in their otherwise hectic lives.Open Hours
Mo to Su from 06:30 AM to 08:45 PMIt was amazing to walk into this place. Absolutely beautiful. We also were able to see a wedding take place and that was really touching. My husband and I were with our friends who are from NY and they loved seeing it too. And if you are seeing the city on a budget like we were stopping here won't hurt your wallet a bit. It is free to see. So add it to your list...it is worth it!
It was a beautiful cathedral and a quiet place in the middle of a busy day. It's close to everything so it is an easy stop to make.
It was Saturday May 10th, 2008 about 3:30 pm and a Wedding was taking place. Visistors were still welcome. The interior awe inspiring beauty will abosrb you. You can pray to your Higher Power in this cathederal no matter whom you are. I recommend this visit, the Church is really smaller than the surrounding buildings - but the inside is taller.
I loved this place it was so scared get to sit down and pray. Even if you aren't Catholic like myself. I did pray. It was so beautiful...
We loved the architecure and Christmas scenes with gorgeous decorations. The quite serenity coupled with magnificent beauty emitted a spirtual reverance that was deeply felt. We will visit St. Patrick's Cathedral again.
This church is so magnificant. I went during Christmas time and I was so amazed at the gradeur of the church itself. Whether you are Roman Catholic or not; the church is a great place for art lovers to go and see. The church shows off great gothic architecture. This place is a must for any traveller.
I went here for the first time on Christmas Eve day. When entering the cathedral, the feeling that came over me was unexplainable. I am not an extremely religious person, but I definately felt a sense of peacefulness and acceptance walking through this holy place. The architechture is unique and breathtaking. Each scene of the saints were ornately decorated as was the rest of the church. There was a beautiful and almost life size nativity scene inside. On our way out, I gazed up and saw the huge organ pipes with the 200 year celebration banners hanging from them. I could have stayed there for hours but the people were filling in for the Christmas Eve Mass that would take place that night. What an experience!
This had alot of great art, the flying dove's (real dove's) the organ's. The masses, There was a .........Souviegner shop in a church which kinda made me wonder. But, I'm from the south where churches don't have them. Other than that, the experience is something I'll treasure. Went back in 2001 4 Months before Sept 11th.
It is breath taking. While in NY I stop by all most everyday. When I return a few years latter I took my wife. She also enjoyed it.
I was there to light a candle for my Mother who had passed away. it is the nearest thing to heaven on earth. It made me feel very close to my Mom. I wish they had a door to step through to see the other side.
