Overview
Originally built by the French in 1726, this New York State Historic Site features pre-Revolutionary War stone structures and the oldest building in the Great Lakes area. Located in Fort Niagara State Park, the fort stands as a monument to living history with re-enactments of famous battles, musket demonstrations and ever-changing exhibits. Guided tours of the fort are conducted by period-dressed guards, supplemented by recorded messages in English and French. Admission: Adults USD7, Children 6-12 USD4, children under 6 free.I liked walking around inside and outside the buildings and liked looking at the architecture. This place has a lot a history to it. It was a clear enough day where I could see the skyline of Toronto, Canada from the other side of Lake Ontario. Being from Michigan, I have seen all four of the other Great Lakes, but this was my first time seeing Lake Ontario.
Old Fort Niagara should be on everyone's list of things to do when visiting Niagara Falls. It has a child friendly relaxed feeling. Great fun on a summer day, or visit during the colder months to see how it might have felt to live there many years ago!
We visited Old Fort Niagara while we were in the area visiting Niagara Falls. It was incredible! It is built next to the Niagara River, where it empties into Lake Ontario. It is just beautiful. We enjoyed walking the grounds and going into the buildings. This was an important fort in American history and the kids really learned a lot. Plus, it has a ghost story, which they love. Don't miss Old Fort Niagara.
