Overview

This National Historic Landmark tells a story dating back to 1917. What started as a small home for troubled and abandoned boys has grown into a campus complete with a Hall of History, All-American Rose and Biblical Gardens, the Leon Myers Stamp Center and more. Visitors can even enjoy a bit of Hollywood: Spencer Tracy's Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan in the movie "Boys Town" is on display. Boys Town is open year-round. Free guided tours are available but donations are welcome.

    Most moving experienceby Yahoo | 2008-07-31 16:11:45 |

In a quiet, serene environment just a short trek from the busy downtown Omaha, we found a breath of fresh air. We had some familiarity of the history of Boys Town (now Girls and Boys Town) but no idea of the power of love and the influence one priest could have on so many people. Much of the background of the Mickey Rooney movie is still intact. Many boys who graduated from this school went on to be famous athletes and contributers to US history. We drove the campus and saw current residents at work and play in the yards. The campus is sprawling with beautiful gardens and architecture. There is a worthwhile museum and a gift shop. I was personally inspired deeply to my religious roots. We were impressed that this indeed would be a regular on our charitable donations list. Go and experience it as a gift to yourself. You will come out a changed person as much as the residents. I believe a family with children with some behavioral issues would benefit from a visit due to the many success stories that echo its halls.

What a place. We visited Boys Town while we were in Omaha for the College World Series. The only thing I was disapointed in was to see how close the city of Omaha has gotten to Boys Town, when I visited it as a child 30-35 years ago, it was in the middle of nowhere, with fields around it. I wish everyone could have seen it that way, as a rural Nebraska haven. Boys Town was started of course to take in "wayward" boys, but the foundational idea is that if you have a place where young boys can just be kids and escape the negative influences of urban areas, that every boy is "good". Boys Town is an actual town! fully functional, and in the old days, it was almost entirely run by these boys! When in Omaha or Lincoln, take the time to visit and make a small donation, you'll enjoy it. If you're a fan of old buildings and especially old churches, bring your camera!!

    I walked aroundby Yahoo | 2005-09-27 09:05:40 |

I showed up there by accident because I was looking for the LDS temple. I walked around and had no idea what the place was. But now that I know, I wish I would have asked more questions. They have a small information building at the outside perminator of the campus.
